I am thinking of purchasing this Orbiana Denarius, RIC 319. I believe this coin to be authentic but wanted your opinions before I put down a substantial amount of money.

I believe it is modern style and would not touch it. Certainly search for matches in the fake reports and see what the seller says about getting a Sear certificate.

Thanks Doug. I think I found one like it in the fakes reports. At least it's close enough to make me doubt it. I'll stay away from it. In someone's famous words: If there is a doubt, there is no doubt.

I agree with Doug, these coins are hard to come by and this one looks too good to be true.

The first question that appealed to my eye is the style.
Compare with similar denarii on the 'VCOINS' website, where you can also compare for price, and the WILDWINDS site for style.

After you have peroused enough appropriate images, come back again on this thread again with some of your opinions.

It is a modern Bulgarian fake and identified as such by Dr. Ilya Prokopov. Here is one from the same fake dies for comparison:-

Maridvnvm: Good work!

Looks like the seller needs to be informed!

"If you want to hide a tree, put in a forest".

Have a look at the VCOINS website, search for Orbiana.
There are lots of similar dies for this type. That makes it easier to hide a fake coin in among the genuine ones.

That makes it harder for the honest non specilaist ancient coin dealer, who may be a bit lacking in his identification skills. Probably explains why the Bulgarians have picked on the coins of Orbiana.

Man, it is a real shame => the whole "fake issue" certainly puts a bit of a black-eye on collecting ancients coins, or any type of coins for that matter, eh?

=> "Buyer Beware"

That's one thing about this forum. At least here you can ask for advice and opinions before you spend those hard earned bucks.
