When I fist started researching the construction of a dime collection I was putting together for my brother, I came across this coin and fell in love with it. Not knowing anything about the science of numismatics, I didn't concentrate on its 'grade'. Now I am curious. What does the community think of this coin?

Thanks,
Terry McManus

I actually prefer coins like this vs a bright shiny uncirculated one. Coin is 200 years old, it tells a history.

Nice coin. You may want to move this post to the grading section.

Tjmcman - that's a beauty. I'm not an expert on grading but it looks EF40. The clasp is clear and the stars have nice center detail on the obverse. On the reverse the left wing is probably not worn as it appears. Many of these early bust halfs were weakly struck on the left side. There is a small rim ding at 3 o'clock on the reverse.

Having the coin in hand is a huge advantage for grading so you might try this web site http://www.pcgs.com/photograde/

Lots of wear on the eagle and Liberty's hair, my guess on this one is VF-30. Looks like a nice original coin.

I would guess it could grade around VF-30. Is the obverse actually pitted like it appears or is that just in the pictures? If it is actually pitted, a TPG would probably give it a details grade with corrosion or environmental damage as the stated reason.

Thanks all. The input on weak strikes is interesting. Being new I'm confused on the disparity of clarity on some parts of the coin and possible wear on others...I.e. the wear doesn't look natural (consistent).

The pitting on the obverse is there.

All these characteristics, though, make this an interesting coin (heck, for me this coin sunk the collectors hook deep in me.)

Again, thanks for the feedback.

This is a NICE coin! Well struck with excellent details!

I would grade this a VF-30 details with some light porosity/environmental damage (causing the obverse pitting).

This is a tough coin to obtain in such nice condition!!
