I believe the writing is arabic. I would be forever grateful to anyone who could tell me what the writing reads! Wasn't sure which way the writing is supposed to go, so I took two pictures. Thank you!

Hello and welcome.

It's not actually a coin. Although the design is very similar to an Egyptian 1/2 millieme from 1929-1932, there are several differences; particularly, the coin should be made of bronze, the Arabic is slightly wrong, the date "1917" is on the wrong side and the portrait seems to be a line-drawing rather than sculpted.

I suspect your item is either a token or a piece of play money.

On the original coin, the reverse inscription says "Al-Mamlakah Al-Misriyyah", which is Arabic for "Kingdom of Egypt".
