My name is Andy - rookie collector due to passed on coins from a parent. Had the collection for some time, but just started to sort, research, etc. I appreciate any help anyone can provide.

In sorting pennies yesterday, I found a Lincoln Penny with a clearly raised 71, where the date 1971 should be. It is not worn, and the 71 jumps off the coin, as does the S below the date. I can't find any reference to any Lincoln Penny error coins in 1971.

The question is - is this a one of a kind error then, and what would be the approximate value?

Your coin could be damaged or it could have been struck with a grease-clogged die, it is impossible to say without a picture.

Andy!

A photo is the only way to determine what it is.

And here are some great reference sites to help you get started on looking for varieties and errors:

It is not a problem with the 71 and mint mark. The 19 appears to be Struck Through Grease, making them weak. Not unusual if you search enough cents.
