So I am new to collecting and I'm only 17. My dad just recently gave me his old coins from when he was my age. It got me interested and gave me a jump start.
now it's just the idea of having something so old that I think is cool that keeps me interested.

I was wondering how others got started and why is collecting interesting to you?

I got started when I was 5 years old... We moved to a new house and the back garden was like a building site (and was 4 foot higher on one side of the garden than the other) so we dug the whole garden and seived out the stones... moving so much earth we found a few half crowns and other coins which had laid there for a few decades...that sparked the interest in me.

Later on I got my grandads coins from his travels in the desert rats...nothing very valuable but a good selection from different countries all around 1940..I remember to a 10 year old how ancient they seemed to me but my collection is pretty modern really compared to many on here.

Collecting is interesting to me mainly because of the history, really our lifes are so brief in the scheme of things and its interesting that we spend so much time accumulating these monetary tokens and then when they are replaced and updated the old one are just testement to a different era.

First of all,

I got started when I was about 7 years old collecting pennies. Wheats were plentiful then so you could fill in a lot of spaces! That lasted about 3 years, then I quit. Stamp collecting was the dark path I traveled. In 1999, when the mint started issuing the State Quarters, I bought the mint and proof sets from the govt and bought them every year. When my father died in 2005, he left a nickle collection that was complete through 1961 with only one or two missing. That sat in a closet until recently. Four months ago I snagged a few key stamps and now I'm left with only 3 that I need. They trade rarely, so I decided to finally get serious about coins again. Part of my searching led me here three months ago. You've come to a great place to learn more!

I got started just browsing the internet I came across some of the commemorative coins. At first I just got a couple of them but over time it grew and expanded into other sets and has been going ever since.

I did used to collect coins from around the world as well as a child, as my dad was in the Navy and would bring them back for me. Sadly that seems to have gotten lost somewhere still trying to locate it around the house but havent had any luck so far

Welcome!

I had always flirted with coin collecting. When I was a little kid, my allowance always came in coins for some reason, and while I didn't have a mature enough mind to appreciate the coins from a collector's point of view, I liked looking at them, and finding the older coins.

I've also always tucked away change. I've never been one who can just let change slip away. I've always had a bucket or water jug to dump change into, I would tuck away any halves or dollar coins that would be given to me as change, and so forth.

Lastly, I also was given the cigar box of granddad's change from his travels around the world, and that has always floated along with me in my travels. Nothing rare or expensive, just something I personally found nifty.

The bug finally got me one bored Tuesday afternoon at the apartment when Netflix had once again failed to suggest anything interesting to watch, and I decided to make a run to our local used CD/DVD store (Dimple) to buy some DVDs and grab some fast food. I picked out some DVDs, paid in cash, and when the change came out to a little over a buck, the clerk said he was low on change but had this large coin. Turns out it was an Eisenhower. It was the little push I needed to say "I really should start looking into coins." I went home, and the rest of the night I spent pouring over the change in my change jug, and looking at websites online for information.

A week later I bought my first Dansco album, and I've been hooked ever sense.

Just for your interest, some old threads on the topic can be found here, here, here and here. My answer to the first half of your question is here.

As for the second half of your question, I like coin collecting because of how it ties you directly to history. As I've said elsewhere, coins are one of the few ancient inventions that are still used today in much the same way they used to use them back when they were first invented, 2500 years ago.

I particularly like ancient and mediaeval coins because of the stories they come with. I own some coins issued by kings and kingdoms who were so long ago that almost every trace of their existence is now gone... except for the coins themselves.

I have always saved wheats and silver when I found them, but I started collecting seriously when I went to an estate auction that had TONS of coins and numismatic goodies. I bought a flat of various (empty) folders that I started to fill. If only I had known a thing or two abut coins at the time. I think I could have made a pretty good profit if I had.

I got started from older relatives giving me wheat cents. I still have quite a few of those. Know how I can tell them form the others? They are all cleaned and polished!

I started when I was 8 and my dad brought home some silver coins he fond in a box in a fireplace in a burned down home in a part of a forest they were thinning that day. He split them between me and my brother, but I bought his when we were in our teens, and I've been hooked ever sense. I see coins as a valuable footprint left by man old and new.

I got started by my Uncle who started me with my blue Whitman folder.... today, he is a coin dealer with a shop and I am still collecting.

By the way.... he helped me start on the selling side of the table too. I'm a part time dealer doing coin shows in my local area.

I never did finish that penny collection... darn old 22 plain!!!

I started relatively recently by discovering THE JFK half dollar hunting thread. From then on, I became obsessed with all things numismatics!
