I definitely agree never clean a coin with value, but if theres no extra value to the coin other than its make up who really cares?

I don't believe in the axiom of "Never clean a coin". It should be "Never improperly clean a coin".
So-called conservation services clean coins every day, thereby improving both the looks and the value of the coins.
At any rate, as for those cruddy Ikes, I'd just power up my buffing wheel and get those puppies shiny bright.

Im getting mixed messages! Are people really going to be mad if I clean these?

IF they get mad, so what? Unless you post photos of cleaned coins that you did, how would they know what you did? Sort of like vacuuming in your house. If no one comes in and sees what you did, no one knows except you.
If your not going to sell those coins, not going to give them to anyone, no one will know what you did to theme if anything at all.
Yes there are many that hate the thought of a cleaned coin but if your not going to tell them, show them, sell them to them, how would they know?

I hate the thought of a cleaned coin, but I hate equally a coin that has been abused so much that it needs cleaning.

There lays the problem...you cannot turn a sows ear into a silk purse, a cleaned coin is less than a perfect coin but if a coin has no eye appeal then surely it is not very salable and lost most of its value anyway.

There are different degree's of cleaning anyway so I don't make you wrong to do what you did to the Ike on the far right as the damage had already been done in my view. (And though there may be many who don't approve of cleaned coins there must be some who share my view also)

I like the pocket method. Technically not cleaning, just more circulation. Controlled circulation, but that's just a technicality.

I dont like cleaned coins of value either, but Id rather have one that was cleaned knowing it was than have some rusted over horrendous looking one just to say its uncleaned.

Yeah, thats how I felt basebal. I wasn't going to keep them looking like that just to make a point! The ikes are now looking a lot better and will be jingling in my pocket for some time today. Its a good thing too, bc I had to show a bank teller what ikes where, she was looking through her pres dollar coins... And to my surprise, she had 15 gem proof 1976 and 77 ikes! I had never seen a gem proof coin in person! They are like mirrors!!! I will be making a new thread to show them off with pics!!! I am so glad I had them in my pocket to show her!

I would have done the same or just spent them. As they were they had no appeal to me. Some coins just get so bad they either need to be put out of their misery or cleaned and theres just no way around it. Thats a heck of a find, what bank was this lol

What's to rust

maybe they were kept in an old coffee can that got water in it.. or something. It might really be rust, but just a surface contaminant.
