if they are only worth 1 dollar, even after cleaning they will still be worth 1 dollar. They are your coins to treat as you see fit.

Ok, I have decided to hold off on the vinegar, but the other treaments will commence shortly! (Finally home from work) These coins are worth their face value only, no silver, so I want something eith eye appeal, which is subjective. Currently their state makes me sad. I see no story or history in the rust. Its not natural wearing or tarnish, its like they were in a damp place for a long time. Just yucky.

Cladding: 75% copper 25% nickel, Core: 100% Copper What's to rust pure acetone but in this case a little residue from nail polish remover ( mostly acetone ) couldn't hurt maybe? do not clean acidently spill some Caution on flammability of acetone

I've never tried vinegar on something like an Ike. I have no idea what it would've done. Maybe you should have said conserve instead of clean, lol.

Yeah, acetone is very flammable. I have worked with it in organic chemistry quite a bit. We actually use it to dry glass because it is so volatile (meaning it dries fast basically). Barkeepers friend is working great with no apparent harm done. There are some spots where it is thinker rust. I don't know what to do now. Its a great improvement, but there are still those spots, and I don't want to scrub because I don't want to scratch. I believeI may try toothpaste at some point.

some toothpastes have abrasives that might cause scratches.

Pictures of the experiment are now up! I consider this a success. I am thinking of stopper here and seeing how it looks after being carried around a while. I also think I might do the same thing to the others and carry them together. Thoughts?

Wearing it down some would be a good way to get rid of the rust if it hasnt penetrated too deep

unfortunately there are places that it did penetrate deep enough that even after cleaning the luster is not there. The other coins will hopefully have a more full recovery! I have only tested on the worst so now I can hope for the best!
