There is a small sand area near my office with a set of swings.

That looks like heaps of fun.

How deep can you detect a cent? Does the angle it's burried matter at all?

With my Ace 250 and a Large 12" coil I can get a cent at 9 inches down.
The angle does not stop you from detecting the coin but it can confuse the discriminator into identifying it as the wrong coin.
I have had Quarters on their sides show as Dimes before.
