A posting for the communities opinion and some schooling for myself. While there is apparent wear on this coin I'm confused by the lack of corresponding wear on the shields of both obverse and reverse...

The shields are not the highest points of either face. Although I'd expect the obverse shield to start showing wear relatively early in the process - yet later than your nearly-AU coin - much of the wing detail will be gone before the reverse shield gets involved.

That's a nice Half. Shame about the obverse gouge.

I'd call XF Details - Damaged/Re-colored. It almost looks like someone took a dark blue marker to the fields and the obverse gouge is significant.

"LIBERTY" on the obverse shield is not a good diagnostic feature for grading. I've seen VF coins where it's almost gone and VF coins where it looks almost mint state.

I agree with EF Details, damaged/cleaned and retoned.
