This kinda fell into my lap today at face value.

My bank knows that I collect and so occasionally they have strange things come in that they hold for me, and when I got there today the lady asked me if I wanted a 1928 $100 bill. So I said sure!

Now I just have to figure out if it is worth anything. Oh yeah, I also have to figure out how to grade notes!

obverse:
1928-$100-FRN

There is slight rippling from the Fed seal to the bottom edge, there is a yellow "X" made by a teller's authenticity checking marker between the Fed seal and Franklin's portrait, there is a very light crease diagonally across the lower left hand corner (completely on the white outside of the printed design), and finally, none of the corners are particularly sharp, although the note is still very crisp.

reverse:
1928-$100-FRN

Any opinions on grade and possible value would be greatly appreciated!

thanks,
CJD

I don't have my referrence material available to me at the moment, but the note looks like a strong AU based on the pics. Hold the coin up to the light and you will notice any dark lines that may run through the note. This is the best way to grade notes. With the counterfeit detecting mark, this drops the value pretty quick, however, I don't have the material to give you an exact figure now.
Being a Chicago Note in this lofty grade, I would expect a number between $175 and $400.

Well, when I hold it up to a light, there are no dark lines that I can see, also, no pin-holes.

thanks for the input ND.

We've sold a couple of notes, and I would grade this one as XF. The corners are a little too curled, there are light creases, and the "X" marking take it out of the AU category in my opinion.

I am far from an expert in this area, though.

I looked at the note for the first time in a week and the yellow "x" is GONE! It must fade (quickly) with time, since I haven't done anything to it to spped up the fading. What it means though is that the same teller who saved it for me was very likely the one who marked it!! I think I will have to have a talk with her, my guess is that she just didn't know that she was decreasing any potential value that it had. I already sent her a thank you, and I think I'll just ask that in the future any "old" or interesting notes not be written on and I'll just agree to buy them all so that the bank won't be hurt even if they are fake.
