I bought a roll of El Yunque quarters from the mint. I lived in Puerto Rico as a child and wanted them as a remembrance. I heard that they were very nice and was excited to dive into them.
I was not happy with the condition of the coins. The fit and finish was beautiful but they were water spotted, scratched and dented more than I would have hoped.
Has anyone else run across this? Hoped to get at least a few in a little better condition.
Has anyone else run into this?

You have posted this in Canadian Commemoratives and Non-Circulating Coinage (NCLT), I think you should move this to one of the United states coin forums. They would have more input about the America the Beautiful Quarters

If you just received them you could return them to the mint for credit and try again. Water spots are one thing, but coins with scratches are another. But you have remember that they are circulating quality coins and you do have to take you chances. However you don't have to accept inferior coins when you are paying a premium for them. I would return the coins for credit and try again.

Contact the mint first and explain that you are unhappy with the quality and want to return them. If you've just received them it should be no problem.

Thanks ghostrider. I'm just venting. I know that they are circulation quality but that they are not meant for circulation. Still it's a beauty and I will keep them but think twice about further purchases.

It's to be expected for bagged or rolled coins. From the roll I got, I only saved a handful that I thought would be suitable for putting in an album.

Mechman, hear you loud and clear. Sure they are nice but I agree water spots ( some sort of cleaning fluid ), dings, scratches, hits, you name it.
As Cap.Fwiffo does, go through and save some of the best.
I'm sitting on all the 2010 and 2011 rolls and trying to figure out what to do with them after paying the mints high buck price.
I did buy the El Yunque P & D to see if they improved IMHO, no.

Sometimes the US Mint has lapses in their quality control. I've sent back several commems in the past because of distracting marks.

I think these NCLTs are washed with a liquid dishwashing detergent before they are bagged or counted into rolls. I have seen the same kind of spotting the OP is concerned with on recent Mint sealed uncirculated Mint sets. I believe the problem is the dryer is too low and leaves water stains. It shows up most often on cents and the golden dollars and are really ugly.
