Today during work I stopped at the store to pick up a couple of bottles of water. Myself and a kid approached the cashier at the same time. I politely told him he could go first. He said thanks and paid for his $5 gas purchase with a handfull of large coins. I asked the cashier if they were halves and she said yes, would you like them. I couldn't get my money out fast enough. There were 8 halves and 1 Susan B dollar.
ALl the halves were clad Kennedys, but 2 stood out. An 1893 Columbian Trade half, and a 1904 Barber half. I sold he Columbian trafe to a co-worker for $5 and kept the other.
Perfect Timing.

What! You sold a Columbian Half Dollar for $5!?!?!?!?!? I think you have to say that's more of a gift than a sale.

I know that halves are at about $10 in silver right now. I already have a Columbian Trade and my co-worker didn't. He is also a roll hunts and by doing him a favor by selling it at $5 this gets me a favor from him in the future when he finds something I want. He is more hardcore than I am and goes through about $1,000 a week.

Very nice of you...but I have to ask. Why do you keep calling it a Columbian Trade?

Barbers and Columbian Halfs are really nice looking coins. It would have been hard for me to sell either, to a good friend let alone a co-worker. Jewelcard, you are a very kind person and earned many karma points that day :)
