How many 1943 copper pennies are known to exist?
If one was looking to buy one how much should you expect to pay and where would you even look to find one?
If you know of any confirmed recent sales please post them.

I found this 1997 article from a 1943S copper penny sale. They also reference a 1943D copper penny sold the previous year for $82,500. "Last month, the retired Lemon Heights entrepreneur sold a 1943 copper penny at an auction in Beverly Hills for $50,000." "Goldberg said the Denver mint produced just one, which sold last year for $82,500." http://articles.latimes.com/1997/ju...cal/me-15071

There are 40 known 1943 copper pennies in existence. It is believed they were made by mistake when some copper planchets were left in the hopper when they were switching to steel planchets.

There were 1943 cents accidentally minted in copper as well as 1944 cents minted in steel. Be careful of unauthenticated 1943 copper cents as some are plated. I have one and it's pretty obvious because the copper color is much lighter than it should be.

I did a search on the Heritage website of past results.
Aug 1999 - XF40 $32,200 Jan 2001 - XF40 $23,000 (same coin as above) Feb 2001 - AU50 ANSC $46,000
These are the most recent sales I could find.

Learn something new everyday. I will still never understand how some of these errors are allowed to exist while others get hunted down by the secret service for decades

1)approximately 20 are known to exist 2)If you have to ask how much, you can't afford one. Expect to pay $50k-200k depending on condition and mintmark, the only viable forum for purchase would be an example being sold by a major auction house or a top end dealer. 3)The last record of auction from Heritage was 2010 when they sold two different coins that both hammered north of $200k w/the juice. I think a couple others have changed hands since then but I am not sure who sold them.

So, what's the possibility of finding one by roll hunting?

The possibility would probably be along the lines of finding a 1894-S Barber dime...not very good. Although I do have both of those...as Chinese fakes.

Biokemist, Quote: 3)The last record of auction from Heritage was 2010 when they sold two different coins that both hammered north of $200k w/the juice. I understand all of this except, " w/the juice." What?

"Juice" may be considered as associated fees?
