After almost falling into the money trap that was the Anastasius coins I roamed around for another coin that would catch my interest. Found this denarius of L. Rubrius Dossenus from the Republican era. It is $29 shipped and was hoping what you think of the coin, it's price, authenticity, and any other relevant opinions/info on it. It seems like a good deal but I want to get your thoughts on it first. I currently do not have any Roman Republic coins.

It is 3.7 grams and 18 mm wide.

Not owning any Republic coins if I have a chance to buy this one for that price. I would probably go for it.

The weak strike on the top of the reverse explains why the price is low. I'd say it is quite fair for what you get. A fully detailed but not high grade example would be over $100 so this seems like the coin for someone with no Republicans and not a high budget. It is fully identifiable and I see no reason to question that it is genuine. The hammerman just did not hit straight and hard enough to make a great coin.

Not counting the Imperatorial coins, I only own a couple of Republic coins. Like Greek coins, I know just enough about them to make me dangerous to myself. But, like Greek coins, I think they are fantastic works of art. They can be expensive as well, so I generally only look and not buy. This is a nice looking coin to me, especially for the price. I'm tempted to tell you that if you don't get it let me know and I will. However, I am once again on a hiatus from buying coins for the remainder of the summer (thru August) since I blew my entire summer budget last weekend.

Bottom line: Go for it.

I once had a chance to get a decent Roman Republic coin for around $30, but alas it was sold before I could get the money for it. For the price, it isn't bad to fill that hole. I might purchase the coin myself if I had the money.

Thanks all for your comments. I went ahead and purchased it.

My first Republic coin! Can't wait to get it!

Dougsmit, nice observation about it being weakly struck. I simply dismissed it as heavy wear just in that spot.

Congratulations!! Hopefully it arrives in the mail. I've been having problems with my orders more than a time or two. :(
