Found this coin today and wanted to know if it is an error or just damage. The "In God We Trust" appears to have been hit by the rim and has made the motto tall. Thank you.

That is an error not a damaged coin.

It is not an error or damage. Die Deterioration. It is a normal LDS (late die state) cent.
