I had my (soon to be sold) Trade dollar that I purchased raw sent in to ANACS and it came back "Chopmarked-Cleaned", it was not obvious to me, but it is what it is, according to ANACS. If a coin, not necessarily this one, was encapsulated by one of the TOP III TPG services (let's say NGC) and identified as "cleaned", is it safe to assume that the others (PCGS or ANACS) would say the same?

Thanks!

Yes. If you sent it in enough times you may get lucky and get it through once, but they all are good at spotting cleaned coins though their standards may differ some.

I may have to use it as a "pocket piece" for a while.

Guys, I'm confused. I've picked up some obviously cleaned coins and I'm picking up that the services won't grade cleaned coins sometimes. But, from the conversations, I've been thinking once cleaned, there was no coming back. Am I wrong in this?

Tjmc it is possible to save a coin thats been cleaned. The only way I know how to do it though is to carry it around and basically just let circulation wear it down enough so that the cleaned surface has been worn off. It takes a while and it will lower the grade, but if done right it will get you a real grade instead of the slabbed saying cleaned on it

No they do not think alike. Each has their own method.
Some will detail grade, others will not grade at all etc.
Check each one before hand for their procedures and labeling
etc. No idea also on what criteria they use for designating
a coin that was cleaned. Also no clue to if the person who assigns the grade also does the cleaning attribution or if that is done by another. Other than Anacs it's a crap shoot
if sending in an older raw coin as far as cleaning. PCGS and NGC seemed to have gotten a little stiffer as of late on cleaning but they still over grade coins compared to Anacs.
But then again it's a business so better grade means more money means more business. That is why I am surprised that they are getting more conservative on the cleaning aspect.
Better off to keep a coin around for a while if you suspect
it had been cleaned over the past 100 to 150 years. Like any have not been at one time or another. Unless it sat in a canvas bag all that time. Good luck !
