I wanted to make diffusors for my jansjos that could be quickly attached to and removed from the lamps without fussing with tape and whatnot, and allowing me to have different sets of them for different occasions. I discovered that if I use a half-dollar coin tube to cut a hole in a piece of packing foam, it's exactly the right size to stick on the lamp. Probably I'll trim them down some so they can be placed close together, but then I just need to glue/tape some diffusion paper and smile directors and all the rest.

Then one idea leads to another... I can assemble little "gels" using half-dollar 2x2s. In this case, they're tissue and foil. The 2x2 gives me a little frame that holds and protects the flimsy materials, which I can then tape to the foam frame.

How well does the tissue diffuse the light, ie can you still see the center hotspot when you look at the diffuser? I like to use Canson Opalux paper for diffusers. It seems to spread the light out extremely well. You may also consider stacking a couple pieces of foam and then attaching the "gel" on the end. More distance from the source and the diffusion becomes more even.

It seems to do the job; coins placed in the light stop doing that "sparkly" thing, at least to my eyes. I'm gonna try some different materials and arrangements, I'll definitely try to get some of that Opalux paper. I don't have the camera or anything yet, so I don't know how any of it works in practice. But I'm having fun assembling these while I'm waiting for all my toys to arrive.

I'm gonna check my local craft and office supply stores first; it's not on prime and I feel absurd paying $6 shipping for a $4 sheet of paper.

I love this forum! Thanks Captain! I just got my jansjo lights. I am getting my new camera and lens in a week:) I will be making these for the jansos' I think! What type of coins do you use this type of set for most often? I have not used a diffusor before?

What camera and lens are you getting? Diffusion is sometimes necessary with the Jansjo lights because they are a point source, which causes various problems. These diffusers were actually unsuccessful when I actually tried to use them. They turned out to be too bulky, so it was impossible to get them close enough together and close enough to the photography rig at a high angle. The intent was to make smile directors this way. The basic idea is to make segments of a ring light which brings out both the color and luster of a coin at the same time while avoiding glare on slabbed coins. Search the forum for more information about them. This is what I'm actually using now for smile direction purposes, which ended up working a lot better. Here's an uncropped image hopefully illustrating how they work: Uncropped Smile Director Example by CaptainFwiffo, on FlickrThe bright areas to the upper left and right of the coin are direct reflections on the slab of the diffused lights. The hole in the middle (through which the camera also shoots) means there's no glare directly over the coin, but the lights are still at the highest possible angle.

Better hurry up and buy your Jansjo lamps: Ikea is discontinuing them. I just bought three of them for 8 bucks last weekend.
