This is a Roman coin of Constantine II as Caesar. Constantine II was one of the sons of Constantine the Great. The coin type is known as a Campgate and depicts the front of a Roman fort the lined the outlining empire. The mint mark of what appears to be SMKA means the coin was minted at the Cyzicus mint circa 324-325AD. It is a nice left facing bust which is more disireable than right facing. It is listed as RIC VII Cyzicus #27 and rated at R-3. It's at least a $20 coin.

Holy crud, $20?! (goes to dig out his own copy of this coin)

Looks like it could benefit from a little extra cleaning, but I wouldnt guess $20! Conservative estimate id say $10.

Also, Roman coins tend to be undated

I found a coin like this for sale on Forum coins at a cost of $60. It is in better condition, but not by much. Take a look: http://www.acsearch.info/record.html?id=231069

I don't think I would clean it much more, but I might add some Ren Wax. It's a nice coin.

Hi Namtar55

... this coin is well centered and has good details, I wouldn't clean it at all, but I would take it out and put it in a flip so you can take it out and look at it..........
I would pay $20 for this coin maybe a bit more...Very nice........

As I wrote in my first rely it's circa 324-325 AD. I hope this coin sparks an interest for you to start collecting ancients.

namtar55: If you have interest in history, then Ancients is the place to be. Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Medieval. Personally, I focus on Roman Imperial, but have dabbled in Roman Republic and Greek. Many of us here used to collect Modern coins and some still collect both. Personally, I like the idea of being able to hold my coin and research the history. With Moderns you don't dare touch them or clean them. But to each his own. If you choose Ancients, we here on this discussion board will help you identify and research, and show you where to find all the sources in order to attribute yourself. Anyway, good luck in whatever you decide.
