Hey guys, I came across this 2001 zinc penny.
What is odd about it, is that the missing chunk appears to be a defect in the metal.

You will also notice, the coin has a few pinholes as well.
Some of these pinhole have an area around them that looks like it's ready to "cave in"
(The pinhole at the stem of the maple leaf for example. You can see a circular area around the hole that looks "hollow")

Also look at the closeup of the Queen's crown. The ornament in the center is "caved in" and also has a pinhole that exposes a hollow void. (Like a bubble in the zinc)

The coin does NOT appear to have aggressive corrosion that eats these coins. That type of metal eating corrosion would be fairly obvious.

The missing metal at the bottom just appears to have "let go" perhaps after being dropped etc.

Would this be considered a "split planchet" or something of the like? Is it an "error" coin.

Thanks for your time.
*Note I posted this in another area-wrong forum, my apologies for the double post*

Your coin suffers from corrosion that has breached the copper plating, not an error.

I just thought I would ask because I don't see the corrosion that is usually on corroded zinc coins.

Here is a close up of the "clean" metal that made me curious.

Perhaps it was subjected to acid, then had the acid neutralized as to stop further corrosion?

There is no "crust" to speak of.

Thanks. Never hurts to ask.

bah, I responded to the one you have is the other section, but to me it looks like it has been arc'ed across A/C voltage. Just a personal though, but I have arc'ed a lot of metal and the results are very similar.

Ya I agree with you now.

I added closure to the other thread too, thanks.
