Is there, or how, are prices set for error varieties that are unknown, and still stuck in the "? zone"...?
I have so many errors of the ? variety, and I just don't know what to do with them all.
Any thoughts on this?
many thank you's in advance -

pennybright, I was in your same boat 'perhaps' ."my thoughts were , Oh ' I have all these different 'errors ' now what ? what are they worth ? how ,/where do I sell them? for how much? ect..well no matter my opinion of " value ". in the 'real world , "Today" what you can sell a item for / what you'll "receive" or 'could' receive for an 'item ' is ; it's 'value ' at that time'; for you . based on what others are willing to "pay " for it (at that ) time . sorry for all the run on ..recalling an often relayed message of : " buy the book before the coin .,. could also include buy the book(s) before selling the coin(s) ..? I've done 'past action results on a number of 'auction sites' to get a 'idea' of prices/'values' achieved in the past. Heritage Auction site has / is used by plenty of people , for recent price(s) realized for auctioned coins _N- such.

Thank you. I'll give a go there. May I ask where you sell your errors?

pennybright , I've not sold any of my errors yet...doing the 'leg' work on recent/real world values just hasn't made it to the top of The List .though being short on funds and long on time; this week I'll be doing just ; as I had mentioned to you. regarding 'values ' yeah I've some that will likely just wait for Attribution/Grading (probably using ANACS services ) others are heading for the chopping blocks (auction)sites...this week...i think I can , I think I can , noted a member here has a auction site COINSNCURRENCY.com *see the auctions other than ebay section for hyper links and more info. last I looked there were no 'basic' fees all. and no real need for premium fees .{ = }'s free listings and i'd really, really like to see an alternative to Fee Bay.errors and varieties are two different 'critters' and I have sold 4-5 Doubled Die modern lincolns on E-bay.my first sale (E bay) was a 2004-D DDR -002 per coppercoins.com numbering system. anyways found a few a them, so with "zero" feedback and at that time no idea that is was a "classified" DDR I got $90.00 (which payed for the; then new QX5 digital microscope; I used to take the picture with 'buyer got a UNC DDR we were both pleased.so me and what ended up being the same winning bidder/buyer did that 'auction' thing again 4(four) times I think with different 2004-D DDR's at $10.00 apiece again we were both happy. other than moving since then nothing but me has / is stopping me from more selling...more here is a link to some web pages of pictures I've taken with the QX5 of mostly Lincoln DDR's.OH yeah that I think ican , ithink I can . sell ,sell , sell.http://mypeoplepc.com/members/mmaah...olmoesinaz/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"> http://mypeoplepc.com/members/mmaah...Holmoesinaz/

Probably a large number of your questionable coins aren't errors and aren't worth over face value. Some of them fall in the 'minor' category and aren't worth much, and a few of them might be dramatic and valuable errors, but those would be the ones that are very obvious to even non-collectors.

You have to separate varieties from errors, because not only are they very different from one another but they also fall under completely different guidelines for value and pricing. They also have completely different specialist, expert, and collector bases. I, for instance, do nothing with errors but am a skilled die variety specialist.

Is there, or, should there be a separate group, or category for these types of 'errors'? I understand that this is serious business, but for those who find, collect, and enjoy these strange mis-haps, where would we fall in?
Thank you very much, I do appreciate your opinion, and, advice.

Coin oddities due to machine malfunction or outside the mint damage? I don't know, there is no numismatic value for such things, so most people have no interest in spending time on them or money storing them. They are common, easy to find, and plentiful. Why bother with corroded, scratched, bent, burned, tooled, damaged coins when there are good valuable coins out there to be had that just take more time, knowledge, and energy to find?

Not knocking it, but that's the way the vast majority of collectors see it, which is why it would be hard finding an interest base in such items.

For fun...well, that's fine, but don't expect the market to pick up on it. These things become valuable because of popularity, and that makes them more popular. Damaged coins aren't popular no matter how you approach it, thus finding a number of people interested in them will be very difficult.

Learn about die varieties and search for doubled dies...learn about the errors that bring value and search for them. If you tune your eye to find the valuable stuff and skip over the culled, damaged, pile of mistreated pocket change, I think you'll find the fun is still there, and the finds will be far more rewarding.
