I'm not an active "Sample Slab" collector, but when I came across the one shown below I had to add it to my collection as I'm a collector of mint state US-Philippines coinage.
This Sample Slab is from a limited number of US-PI coins slabbed in the early 1990s. It comes from the time when PCGS was putting a grade on the holder as an example of how/where it would appear on the label; a coin in such a sample slab may or may not have merited the printed grade.
My feeling about the coin in the holder I've presented is that it is, in fact, a higher-end mint state coin and could very well receive an ‘MS-64' designation if submitted for a formal grade. Of course, that will never happen as long as I own it as I enjoy the novelty of the "Sample" designation.
