I received this PCGS sample slab from a seller as a bonus. It appears to be what is called an "old green holder" type slab, with a grade (MS64) and a generic serial number 12345678. Any information about these? Popular collectibles, or just a common and expendable advertising gimmick for PCGS?

Thanks for your input!

Some can bring a nice penny. There is a segment of collectors who like these a lot although I couldnt speak for this one in terms of value or rarity

they are actually both collectible and a common and expendable advertising gimmick for PCGS. These were usually given out at coin shows with normal everyday coins in them to show their new slab or label. Some people actually do collect these things though

Yes that would be an old green holder sample slab. I called this on PCGS 4S1, I don't know what number Cameron gave it. This would have been given away by PCGS during the 1990 to 1995 era. I would call it a common sample slab but samples are becoming collectibles and do have a small following. It's a nice bonus from the seller and would probably bring between $10 and $20 on ebay.
