I think Chuck explained it pretty clearly...or are you looking for a simplified explanation ?

Die state is the amount of wear on the die at the time of a certain coin was struck.
Die stage is a collection of information of what events happened to the die during the life of the die. Used mainly for varieties. On the CONECA listings they include die state with the die stages, but events happen and the die suffers. So they make a listing to show what timeline the die was when it struck yur coin.

I agree on the explanation. Pretty thorough and concise.
And also thanks on the simple one.
Just wanted to be sure so that for a future post I have about Die States
will be accurate. And it will pertain to varieties.

This is one area where EAC has it wrong. What are typically referred to as die states for the different varieties should be called die stages.

Now, with that said. When one is talking about only "Varieties"
Should "State" or "Stage" be used ? Or both ?
And also, do EDS, MDS, LDS etc. mean only "Stage" on "Varieties" only ? Or only "State" ? Period.
Will be posting my other questions shortly so I want to be as concise as possible when doing so.
Thank's

EDS,MDS,LDS are "die states" and can be used on any coin. It is simply a time frame in the life of the die.
As Chuck already mentioned...the stage is just a more specific time in the life of the die....and stages are not recorded on all coins.
