Is This An 1878 Reverse On My 1879 S Morgan?

On the 1878's, 1879's rev of 78 and the 1921 the top arrow feathers go straight back. All other years, the top arrow feathers angle up. Report this Post to the Staff
colu41 Valued Member United States 376 Posts	Posted 07/30/2012 8:20 pm I have a 78, 91, and 96 and the top arrow feathers are all the same. When I bought the 78 the 2x2 had Rev of 79 written on it. What does this mean exactly? Report this Post to the Staff

GR58 Bedrock of the Community United States 11951 Posts	Posted 07/30/2012 8:59 pm I hope I didn't post something incorrect, I should look things up before posting. The RedBook does show 2nd and 3rd reverses for both the 78 and 79 coins. But I am not a Morgan expert. I do know 78's can have 7 tail feathers, 8 Tail feathers and 7 over 8 tail feathers. AS for the tail feathers, I think what posted above is the reverse of 78. Here is how the tail feathers should look like .. on the Rev of 79 I hope if I said something that is not correct, then the Morgan experts will correct it. Report this Post to the Staff
SsuperDdave Moderator United States 23522 Posts	Posted 07/30/2012 9:12 pm Nothing amiss with what you're saying, GR58. Morgan reverses have 4 major classes. The "A" reverse is the first one, the 1878 8TF. The "B" Reverse is the parallel-feather (Reverse of 1878) posted above - this one covers 7/8TF & Long Nock versions (B1), and the short-nock B2 as in that 1879-S above. The "C" Reverse is the "Reverse of 1879" (even though it was also used in 1878) which covers pretty much every Morgan minted after 1880. Then there's the "D" Reverse, used only with 1921's.
