Hello, I have three or four of these interesting problems. There is a rotational shearing effect on the rim. On the opposite side of the rim there is a corresponding dent. On each coin there is both the dent and the sheared area. The coin with the largest shear also has the largest dent on the opposite side and the smallest shear has the smallest dent. My first thought was a counting/rolling machine jam. But I don't know about how this happens. The counting machine damage I've seen is rings on the surface of the coin. Can anyone help me determine what this is?

Garretterika, these are damaged coins either from the minting process, post strike inside the mint where they are handled and packaged, or post mint at a bank or someplace else where they are rolled or rerolled. They could have been damaged during shipping (drop a 1000-coin bag and something's bound to happen). When there's 300 million of them struck in such a short period of time, there's bound to be damage to a fair number due to hasty and presumably rough handling. I just bought my first roll at a local bank and every single GW dollar in the roll had some sort of damage or marking which would make them less than MS-65 (certainly no higher). These GWs already have a rough life.

There's no value attached to such damage. If anything, it most likely will make them unslabbable by the TPGs (except ANACS which slabs problem coins). Error coins are those in which a mistake is made during the minting process: for the GW, missing edge lettering (apparently common), a broken die, a die used which is slightly different than the other dies (actually, a variety rather than an error), doubling, wrong date (unlikely in a GW), and other mistakes while being struck. Not every mark on a newly minted coin is an error or variety. Lots of qualifications to this - books have been written on the subject.
