What percent red does a coin have to be for PCGS or NGC to call it red? Also what is the percent red for it to be redbrown? I was looking at some Indianheads on ebay that looked quite red but were certified redbrown and it made me wonder about this.

Thanks

Hi Thundercoin

PCGS breaks it down like this

red = 95% or more of the orginal mint bloom or color

Red brown = 5 to 95 % of the original mint color remaining

brown = a coin that no longer has the red color of copper .

needless to say ,the standards that I use for my own coins is a bit more stringent.

Metalman,

That is very interesting. A 94% Red coin would seem to be much more sought after than a 6% red coin!! :) That is about what I thought though, as I noticed some really red RB's. This helps me know what to look for though.

Thanks,
Thundercoin

Hi Thundercoin

This info was take from the PCGS grading guide,, I can help but wonder why they have made the RB catagory so broad ?

Buy Hey they are the experts .

Just another reason for me to stick with Raw coins .
