Hi, came across a really wierd error on a 1945-S War Nickel today; almost looks like a full face double of left side including 2nd chin, mouth, nose & eye. not to mention numerous other irregularities on obverse, reverse & edges. Scans don't show very well, kosing the tree dimensional effect. but hoping you could help with an explanation. Thanks, Deb

to ccf. Can you post a photo either with a cell phone camera or a point and shoot using macro setting? A photo would help a lot. Going by your discription without a photo it sounds like Machine Doubling in which case would have no added value. If it is a doubled die that would have a premium.

It does sound like what is noted as machine doublkng. And although not a real Doubled Die, many people do sell them for a small profit. A great example of that is with the 1955 Lincoln Cent. There is a famous Doubled Die one worth a lot of money. However, there are many of that date with what appears to be doubling on the date but is really just what is called Machine Doubling. And those too sell as what is called the Poor Man's Doubled Die since it is not really a Doubled Die but sort of looks like one.
Are you confused? So are many others.

It was stuck to another coin with glue or other gunk. The doubling and other anomalies are just the gunk stuck to the coin, not an error.

Yup, just some residue left over from being stuck
to another nickel. Probably done when they were rolled.
You can see the impression GOD in the residue from the pther coin.

A short Acetone bath would make that look much nicer.
