nice coin here...the luster is amazing in person...its very prominent on the obverse relief and the mirrors on both sides are original surfaces that have patina which, under light, shimmy a beautiful combination of colors...I do see some light hairlines on the surface so my guess is this was soap and watered 100 years ago...

I will be posting this on my youtube channel and placing the link for any of you that wish to see this "in-person" yourselves...

I'm lost on grade on this one...the strike is weak so I don't know...this is my 30th Seated dime in my set and I am stuck...please fire away boys...thanks

At first glance this looks like a great coin, but something doesn't feel right. What concerns me is that all detail has been muted, no sharp edges, everything rounded off and softened. The edge, ONE DIME, wreath, date, USA, shield, all look soft and round. I have seen this on coins that were over whizzed. Not saying this piece is but if I hand the coin in hand I would be checking what luster remains under a glass to see if I can see any of the polish lines. For a coin that would grade EF-AU everything should be sharper.

than that will explain the hairlines, whizzing...i have a 30x loop and I was all over this last night and I agree with the "softness" of the details...I think it was polished which explains the luster on the obverse relief...it also explains that what seems like a weak strike on both sides is actually polished down

I'm giving this XF to AU Details Whizzed - a good pickup for under $30

ALWAYS a great education on CCF, thank you as always Indian

you confirmed what I was denying to myself...like a parent who refuses to believe it was their kid that sexually assaulted the neighboring farm's livestock, I was refusing to believe it was my coin that was whizzed but your intervention helped me face reality and, in the end, I will love my coin regardless of its shortcomings...

dsfreeworld, don't feel bad, you still made a decent buy and you gained knowledge. I once bought an 1875-S Seated dime at the Long Beach Coin Show in the mid 70's. A drop dead gorgeous GEM BU (I thought) at a bargain price. When I got it home and looked at it closely, it had the same signs, soft detail and the hairlines were very apparent in good lighting. It had great eye appeal in the crappy show lighting. I lost some money on that one but learned something from it.

Looks VF-35 cleaned and polished at one time long ago I would say.
But that said you still have a great coin at a decent price.

Thanks Captain. I am curious as to why you see a VF35 over an XF? I ask out of respect and for my continued education. I like to think my eye for Seated coinage is getting sharper due to the amount of Dimes and Quarters I have amassed and I would have called this XF details.

appreciate it

I would go XF45.. The softness just looks like a strike issue to me. I've seen much worse on AU Seated dimes. Still a fairly attractive coin for the money.
