Ancient Greek, perhaps? Any idea what it's worth? Thanks!

I believe it says "copy" Under the horse and person in the lower picture. My mother actually has 2 of these in her collection, both also say copy.. I don't know much about ancient coins at all.. Not at all, but as copies they can't be worth too much at all I'd assume.

LOL, good catch Nathan! I missed that. This is from a coin collection that I've had since I was a kid and just happened to come across in the garage recently. Thanks for your reply!

The double rim between 6 o'clock and 10 o'clock gives it away, without the word 'COPY'.

I would buy this coin for my ancient black collection, anyway, for a couple of dollars.

Good information in this thread with links to others: http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...PIC_ID=25115

In particular part of one of the posts from Sap:

Quote:
The main giveaway with these is the huge hole in the man-faced-bull's neck; all these copies seem to have it. These holes look similar to the holes on some modern Slavey replicas; the holes on those latter ones were placed there when the copies were made, to allow for easy attachment of pins and lugs for converting them into buttons, earrings or cufflinks.

In addition to this one saying "copy", of course

This copy of a tetradrachm from Gela was issued as an ad for a book on Greek (Readers Digest?) 30-50 years ago. I'm told that they were glued two to a card at one point and you often do see them in pairs but I don't have the card to show. I believe they made a second appearance as advertising painted gold. They are among the most common and least deceptive ancient fakes even when someone has scratched off the copy mark.

Did you know that this coin was made by the same people that made boats for the Bay of Pigs invasion?

Dory Development Corp still has a web page but it shows nothing and only offers to send their catalog on request. Their products were not made to deceive but to fill the shelves in gift shops.

Thanks for all the replies, everyone! In looking at the photo now, I've had a good laugh that I didn't see the "COPY". It's not as easy to see when you're actually looking at the coin, but in the picture with the flash and so forth it's pretty clear. However, another coin that I was trying to identify turned out to be a gold sovereign, so that made up for the minor disappointment! As you can tell, I'm not an expert coin collector. Thanks again and cheers.

Watchingfromafar, your garage sounds like an gold mine. Grab a metal detector, I bet theres a hoard under it.

Out of interest, care to share the rest of your finds in the garage?

Hi Ben,

Well the coin collection itself I've had since I was a kid, I just had it stored in a box in the garage and forgot all about it. We've moved several times since I had last seen the collection (I'm turning 40 in a month or so!) and I just assumed it was lost long ago. Aside from the gold sovereign that you helped me to identify, the other coins that my uncle had brought me back from Australia and New Zealand are quite common, although they still maintain sentimental value for me. As a kid, I recall that the Australian 20 cent coin with the playpus on the back was (and still is!) one of my favorites. However I also collected silver dollars and have some Morgan silver dollars (one 1890 and some early 1900's) that are worth something, as well as a 1964 half dollar. Aside from that, I have some interesting Canadian coins and a few Italian coins that I haven't had the chance to research yet. No more sovereigns, but perhaps I can find something else worthy of posting a picture of. Hope the day finds you well.
