I was wondering if anyone could explain the evolution of lady liberty and her use on the coinage of the US along with some words? There are all types of questions that can come out of this, but here are just a few:

1. The Lady's use of a cap.
2. The lady's description of 'liberty' being on all coins.
3. Where did we start with E Pluribus Unum?
4. When did we start 'In God We Trust'?

Thanks,
Terry McManus

Amida, thanks very much for the pointers. I appreciate it. Its interesting about when 'In God We Trust' was started, the Civil War era. It was shortly after the second world war that it was made the US offical motto.

I am intrigued with the Phrygian cap.

Thanks again.

There's an 1863 Civil War token that reads: "God Protect the Union"

Note that the colonial New Jersey cents, circa 1786, read "E Pluribus Unum"

I think IN GOD WE TRUST was first used on the 1864 2 cent coin.

The 1864 2c was the first use of "In God We Trust" on U.S. minted coins.

E Pluribus Unum was our official motto from the 1790's until 1955 when In God We Trust was adopted. But I'm not sure if IGWT replaced the old motto or is in addition to it (two official mottos). Especially since the older motto was never discontinued.
