Hey all, did me a google for a 1878 error Morgan silver dollar, and it led me to this site, just got done checking a few things out here and want to say it all looks very good to me, so I am glad to be a part of the forum here, and I do have a quick question (hope this is ok in this area to post it) but I sent some morgans into NGC for grading, and looked today one of them has the marking of, 1878 8TF HOT-50 VAM-20 DOUBLED DATE. now can someone tell me what the "HOT 50" means ? thanks for your help !

the Hot 50 is just a list of coins the author of a book (list) put together of coins they thought were the most significant VAM's that interested them at the time of the writing of the list. There are a few of them for the Morgans, you have the Top-100, Hot-50, Hitlist-40, Super CD (Clashed Dies). These are the ones I can think of right off the top of my head. There are allot of people that want to put together a set of coins that is on these lists (like have a complete set of every TOP-100 VAM's) and that is what can add value to the coins on the list. But I must add that it doesn't always add value to the coin, it really has allot to do with interest in that particular list and specific VAM that can add value to the coin over what any other coin of the same date/mm would be worth Edit: I hear all the time from my kids that I try to describe things in so much detail that I make it where they can not understand what I am trying to explain to them any longer. If I have done this by trying to describe the answer to you please ask any specific questions you do not understand and I will try to explain it in another way that makes it easier to follow

hey Bryan1315, wow great answer, did not know all of that, and a big thanks for the fast reply & answer on that, yeah, got 8 morgans right now @ NGC, and 3 other 1878's had some extra VAM or error on them too, so will be real happy now when I get them back after your great answer to my question great job !! and a shout to John1, my same state bud here, lol, how goes it !! oh and wanted to say 1 more thing, I ordered 8 sets from the mint of the new 2012 proof's and had to send 6 back because the reverse proof's had scracth's on them, and I called them the next day also and asked if other's were saying the same thing, and they said yes, so I figure I am going to get me a few sets of the PF70's because I think it will be tough for alot of them to be graded 70, but the mint did refund all my money and shipping and my cost to ship back, other then that glad to be here, take care all and cya's soon !!
