I am looking at this 1840-O Quarter and wanted to know what the CCF thinks that PCGS gave it.

Doesn't the date look small in comparison to the later years?

I could get a better grade coin, but I have a weakness for the branch mints.

Thanks as always!

Date is normal for this piece. It appears to be softly struck and could go as high as XF40. I'd like it better as a strong VF30 or maybe VF35.

I feel that this is a good representation of the first Quarters struck in the New Orleans mint.

not as nice as Gyrene7483 https://goccf.com/t/125361

Hard to believe that only 425,200 were struck, which may have been the norm back in the day. The 1 million coins produced in a year was not achieved until the "Arrows and Rays" variety was coined in 1853 (15,210,020 for Philadelphia and 1,332,000 for New Orleans).

(The first issues of this year lack drapery at Liberty's left elbow. They are much more common than the later issues of this year where the drapery was added.)http://www.coinfacts.com/quarter_do...dollars.html
