Hey there guys,

I am relatively new to coin collecting, and brand new to this forum. All help is greatly appreciated.

I have these 5 old coins, and I don't have the slightest idea how to identify them.

Also, before you have a look, I am already 99.8% sure these are all fakes. I just want to see if any of them are real. My dad got all 5 very cheap while overseas serving in Afghanistan from the local market in Kandahar.

Coin 1 - Appears to be copper. Appears to be folded metal. Some sort of bird (possibly a crane) on front.

Coin 2 - Mans head looking to the left on back. Some sort of bird on front.

Coin 3 - Mans head looking to the right on back (possible helmet?). Man riding horse on the front. Looks like possible Greek wording on front. "EYKPATIA" appears on bottom of front. More wording across top (can't make out).

Coin 4 - Woman's head looking to the left on back. Lettering "CARBVLA" on front. Very thick coin. Approx. 1cm

Coin 5 -Woman's head looking right on back. Maybe some sort of horse on front. Appears to be copper. Again, very think. Approx 1cm.

Any thoughts/comments are welcomed.

Thanks

DCH,

Thanks so much!
Do you know if these coins are valuable or scarce? Would it be worth it to make counterfeits? I'd much rather a real coin worth no money, then a fake coin trying to be a diamond in the rough.

#1 is probably genuine, but the other four are all either "fantasies" or "tourist copies" of ancient coins. #3, for example, is a replica of a silver tetradrachm of king Eukratides I of Bactria, an ancient kingdom situated in what is now Afghanistan/Pakistan. A genuine tetradrachm with this design can be seen on the Wikipedia page I linked to. But #4 is actually copied from a coin from an ancient Spanish city; not the sort of coin you're likely to find in southern Afghanistan. Genuine example.

A large percentage of the "ancient coins" for sale over there are fake, sad to say. Especially if they're "very cheap".

Sap,

Thanks for your help! Well, gotta say, 1 outta 5 isn't too bad. I was expecting all 5 to be fake. Do you think there is any chance the other 4 are real? Or are you almost positive they are all fake?

I'm afraid I suspect No 1 is also a fake. There has been a rather annoying upsurge in fake Islamic bronze coins of "collectable" value - particually those depicting animals, sunfaces or other "non-script" based motifs.

The bottom two are *definitely* fake.

I have to say, the top one does look to be suspect with the erosion.

Second one is also nearly certainly fake, and the one under it is too good to be true, so it also most likely a fake. Way too fine to be taken at that price.

The upside to these things is that they are nice looking at a cheap price and are a great conversion piece.
