I just purchased a 50 coin lot from IndianGoldEagle for a decent price. This lot is mostly loaded with late Roman AE4 coins. This is the lot that IndianGoldEagle purchased from a dealer in Haifa Israel, 20 years ago. A lot of them are starting to show some progress, some of them are near slugs. This is the original lot image. I haven't taken one of my own but I will be showing coins that are making progress cleaning wise. Or coins that I need help with if I don't know what they are. Here are a few coins to start with. The first one I'm making progress with but not done cleaning. This coin needs a little more work and hence it is soaking right now. The obverse is lacking details, the reverse isn't bad. I wonder if this coin is from Ravenna or Rome since there is at least an "R" in exergue. I noticed this type of reverse could be from Honorius onward, or Acadius onward on the east side of the Empire. I have no idea what this coin is. Does anyone know? Here is another coin that I don't know what it is. I would appreciate some help. I'd like to say a big thanks to IndianGoldEagle. Great shipping, packaging and price. This is the first uncleaned lot I've actually ever received! lol I'm going to be posting more coins from this lot to this thread as time goes by. As many of you know, cleaning can take awhile. Cool batch! A lovely spread too. Looks like you have a lot of different reverses - Good luck getting those all cleaned up. It looks to me like your mystery coins are middle eastern - thats as far as I can help. You'll probably need some epxertise which I havent seen exercised on this board to help with those, maybe Forvm's forum.

If they are Islamic or Middle Eastern coins, Sap and some others on CCF will be able to help. I am no help at all with these.

Here is a quick update for this coin. I doubt I'll get too much more detail out of it for now.

Gil, you can definitely get more off of it. Use a dental pick and be a bit rougher til you get to smooth patina.

Gil-galad, I'm happy to see some of these are cleaning up. What are you using to clean them?

I'm just in the first phase of cleaning right now. I gave each coin a rinse in hot water, and a light scrub. After that I put them in a bowl with hot distilled water and Dawn dish soap. I let them soak for awhile. Then scrub them again with a electric toothbrush.
Now I'm going to soak them again. Some don't need anymore cleaning and so I will pull those out.
Then after a few days I will check them and decide what I'm going to do next. I might soak some in olive oil, maybe. Then resorting to toothpicks, needles, etc.

I just pulled this coin out of the lot just now. Anyone know what this coin is by chance?

GilGalad, I believe the reverse is upside down. I'm currently cleaning one of Eudoxia, I think its victory.

I wish you the best of luck with this.
I like the idea of buying uncleaned coins... rather than just buying a coin and putting it away you have some entertainment and mystery to your purchase. I will keep watching and learning before I am confident enough to try, let us all know what technique's you are using to get them clean.

That coin you have circled. That's the one that he decided to keep. I don't mind, there are plenty of coins here. lol Theodosius I - Gloria Romanorvm - Antioch mint. I haven't fully attributed the coin yet. It's also not completely cleaned. This coin finally revealed some details, enough to see what it is. Still some cleaning to do, but not too much. Even with the dirt removed, the coin is badly worn.
