Hello, I came across this coin in a larger collection that I bought a while ago, I need to know if it is real or not. I tried comparing this to pictures I found online, but the only thing that seems to be off to me is the date, it looks too straight, like it doesn't follow the curve of the bottom edge of the coin. I also noticed that the edge is reeded. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

It does not look authentic to me. As you had mentioned the date looks incorrect and there was no reeding of edges for these coins.

The surfaces look cast to me. I dont know much about these, but I would bet huge money that it is fake. :-(

It is without a doubt a modern fake. Even ignoring the mushy strike and variations in design, the edge is all you need to look at to know it is fake. Draped Bust dollars were struck in an open collar and had a lettered edge, this coin was struck on a modern collared press. And of course, the weight will be incorrect(light) and it might even be magnetic.

Well, even though it is a fake, I will put it with the rest of the fakes I have and use them to educate others on Numismatic Forgeries and fakes! Thank you!

Yep this is a counterfeit. I have two of these in my collection, soon to be published on The Black Cabinet under the designation CF-S$1-1799-0002. Here's a pic of one of them in comparison to two other 1799 counterfeits: https://goccf.com/t/123811Yours looks like it's a die variety I haven't seen before, though. The ones I have have a small die chip on the reverse between the eagle's tail and it's leg holding the olive branch. Yours does not. :-)

Doesn't look even close to what it should look like.

For those with a less educated numismatic eye, a good way to quickly spot the fake dollars and halves is to look closely at the edge. If it does not have a lettered edge, it's fake. Most fakes I've seen usually have reeded or plain edges.

Your eagle's mama must have gotten into the DDT.
As far as fakes go it is not laughable, but there are all kinds of things pointing to it being fake.

I agree its a fake for sure, the reeded edge is a dead giveaway.
