Aetheling and Crystalk64, I would hope that you wouldn't refrain from participating in discussions just to "keep out of trouble". I have read many posts by both of you on other forums and you both bring up very good points in discussions that are thought-provoking and that stimulate different viewpoints. All I ask is that you keep it "family friendly" and I trust that you both will be able to do that. I have a tremendous amount of faith in our members as we all just want to enjoy the hobby and educate others while doing it.

Ah but is that the opposite of the stated or the opposite of the inferred? ;-)
Well I do believe I've just gone for the 'third opposite'

Glad to see you've found the joys of 'atl + 146' (unless your shortcut key is different to mine! :-)

Old Dan I haven't been in trouble for quite some time? Trying to be a model citizen and buffalo hunter at the same time! Mike, good to see we have a pot stirrer! And Susan, I have nothing but respect for you and those other great collectors I have found here! I appreciate you and Bobbys contribution to our hobby and really glad that ND is a part of this forum! I am not to sure when I actually said anything that amounted to much but I do enjoy getting my 2 cents worth in now and then. Actually many of you amaze me when it comes to coins as you actually STUDY the darn things! Guess I have my hand in to many fires to spend that much time on any specific coin but my goal is to always be able to say, regardless of the coin, "I owned one of them" or more perferably, "I HAVE ONE OF THEM"!!! Needless to say, I have a ways to go but boy do I love the hunt!!! And, if Old Dan wasn't such a HOARDER there would be a lot more coins on the market! Yes, that must be it! All the coins are hidden away out west and they are manipulating the market!!! Darned if I didn't come up with another good answer (rumor to some of you)!

My philosophy entirely. As some might know I don't tend to hold onto coins for more than two years generally. Many times people come up and say "you sold that Gothic Florin, why?" where I reply well you know, thrill of the hunt and all. The best part of buying coins is searching for one and the zenith of glory is handing over the money and knowing you've captured it. After that my interest wanes and decends (sure I enjoy looking after the coin and learning about it) until a point in the future where I only see the coin as a means to an end of buying the next one on my hit list. I never could afford all the coins I've ever wanted at the same time, thus I've decided to own them all but in series, one after another! It's working so far, no profit whatsoever in this approach, in fact you lose quite a bit along the way. But who cares as long as you're having fun. To me coin collecting's alot like saving up for an holiday to say Egypt. You'll spend a ton of cash just to go there for two weeks, doesn't mean the money's wasted though does it? You've been there, experienced it, bought the T-shirt and got some great memories along the way... so where to next?

Ætheling, I think you have stated the way I feel about collecting almost right on the button. I have a few sentimental coins, but beyond that,I always looking to change up and go in another direction! Mike

Ætheling I got a Belgian computer input board Æ and am amazed that alt 146 gives indeed the famous sign Æ for this system is configured to be able to write flemish and french with all the accents included I have no coin that survived my first two waves of sell offs I try to tell myself I am an investor not a collector ( lies people can tell to themselves )

Most of the coins currently in my collection were purchased from 2003 onwards, over half were bought in the last half of 2004 to early 2005. This time last year it was 2002-2004 that most of my coins dated from. I have a few coins that have survived from years prior to 2003 but these tend to be lower value coins and a small handful of sentimental coins. Such as a worn George III penny and a worn 1944 Washington quarter that I got way back in about 1990 or even 1989. But very few coins survive from as far back as that, and are not really considered part of the 'Good Collection' but merely the 'Secondary Collection'. The oldest coin I have that still manages to hold it's own in the 'Good Collection' is an Edward I penny that I got sometime between 1994 and 1996.

I have coins lying around which I do not consider part of my coins Like twelve 35 year old copper pennies I put in library closet with windowsdoors ( without that they would have been cleaned away by the dusting and cleaning fairies ) Also an asorted lot of well circulated 20, 50, 100 silver frank pieces the oldest probably the atomium from 1958 Universal Exposition in Belgium and a few 500 franc coins I thought silver at the time but now turn out to be mostly nickel Then of course since I dabbled in close up magic I have A magnetic penny A half crown and penny one one coin The disappearing penny The pennies in the okito box that will penetrate a table etc Oh and I nearly forgot the penny you can get in and out of a bottle
