The situation: I bid on an item on ebay. The shipping is $2.85, which I consider to be reasonable. I win. I bid and win 4 other items from the same seller within an hour. The shipping on each is $2.85. There is nothing in the auction listing about discounted shipping for multiple items. Normally I would email in advance and ask about combined shipping, but I didn't find the items until just before they closed. Seller has 300+ feedback, with 100% positive. So, I have 5 items to be shipped. I get the invoice showing $14.25 shipping. I email the seller to discuss a shipping discount and the seller responds "I don't offer shipping combinations. I never had and I never will." The overall tone of the email is, at the least, confrontational. I want to respond by telling him that if that is his policy, that is fine, but I fully expect to receive 5 individual parcels, not all 5 in the same package. My dear wife says I should let it go. Opinions welcome before I send my response... ***Edited by Forum Dad to move to ebay Discussions***

I agree with your wife. My experience in dealing with ebay sellers is what is NOT said is many times more important than what IS said. It just goes to show what greedy people there are out there. I believe there is no one on this forum that wouldn't give discounts! Rob

I agree also. Not worth the hassle or a possible bad transaction. You weren't really expecting a discount from the beginning so nothing lost. Many sellers would have discounted in this situation but it is obvious that is not this sellers policy and you are not going to change his mind.

there are many sellers on ebay here, some of the very few I would ever trust for quality, discounted prices, and overall piece of mind, But keep in mind I am not a big fan of ebay

I would wager that you are not the first person who has had this problem, I know it's happened to me once. I if were you I'd complete the transaction and never do business with the seller again. For an extra measure of revenge you could post who the seller was on this forum. Oh yeah, I'd also let him know that I was spreading the word about his poor business practices. Many good sellers get a lot of customers from this site. Take Harlan Berk for example, those guys should be paying Bobby and Susan comission. Similarly, I'm sure many disreputable sellers have lost business from posts on this forum.

I agree that it would be nice for the seller to combine shipping, or at least offer some sort of break since you bought 5 items. However, if it isn't in his policy he isn't obligated to do so, and what he is doing isn't unfair. I think it is a little greedy, and I'd probably avoid this seller in the future.
I don't think it is worth too much effort to try to save a few bucks since he hasn't done anything wrong.

I agree with everyone so far. It is unfortunate, to say the least, but you can't really fault the seller. I don't think it's out of line to expect 5 different packages, but I don't think I'd request it... quote: Similarly, I'm sure many disreputable sellers have lost business from posts on this forum.
I don't think that is true, and I especially don't recommend comments like this here in todays "sue happy" age. I think of it as the forum just giving people access to a wealth of knowledge so that they can better judge for themselves where to spend their money....

Hi all, Normally I am in complete agreement with the group here, but not today. We as purchasers do not have the opportunity or the right to try and dictate what a vender's policies are. If he does not offer a combined shipping discount that is his prerogative. Sort of like going to the grocery store, buying food and expecting them to give you 30 day terms to pay for your milk. Our expectations do not make him wrong or a poor businessman. Caveat emptor. Jim

Let it go, and make a note of not dealing with him again, if you are really unsatisfied. It is not worth getting angry about, its just one of those unfortunate instances.

Let it go.
I had the same situation a week ago, postage was $7.99 each and I purchased 4.
After I emailed them (Hong Kong) they agreed to reduce postage on 3 items by $2 each.
Next time ask before you buy.

I would write something like:
It dissapoints me that you are unwilling to give reasonable shipping for multiple items. Odviously, satisfying customer satisfaction isn't a high priority in your line of business. Full payment will be made shortly.
I once bought from a guy that stated he gave multi item shipping discounts. Yeah, $1 off for each item with $4 shipping. What a break!

I'd just pay him, then add him to my list of "sellers I won't buy from again". Then notify him (just to annoy him) that you expect five separate packages, and let it go.

Okay. My wife is right again. I should have already known that. This wasn't a seller that usually sells coins judging by his past sales (and by his misplaced, mis-spelled listing).

Sorry, I just saw this. Are you planning on paying with Paypal? If so, and he has a business account, you could be sure to pay for each item individually. (There is an extra .30 per transaction fee.) This would not be out of line since he's not giving you a break on the shipping.

Susan has a heck of an idea. I would go that route, and pay for them several hours or couple days.
