This just arrived to day and when I opened the package, I was shocked, I thought to my self " by the gods-this coin is ridiculous!" Everything that I ever wanted in a coin is here, its real, its silver, its large and the die was engraved by a guy who was clearly the Leonardo Da Vinci of ancient engravers. Its a shame that the man's name is lost to time. Here this man created one of the finest portraits of this great Syrian King whos legacy surives as the Benefactor of Judea. I wonder if the Romans produced such a photographic portrait on any of there coins?

I challenge you guys to find a Roman portait that would give "Leonardo" a run for his....money. (Again no pun)

The coin was not super expensive, but IMHO worth every penny. I almost posted him together with a tet of his dad Demetrius I Soter and his bro Demetrius II Nikator. My Kings of Syria collection, I have developed a thirst for fabulous greek art.

Relative correct... But having seen these and Similar going for $300-1000, I would never pay that. Search daily and bargin with "your guy" and they can be had for less than $200.

Collectors differ on what they see in a coin. Some see beauty in excellent die work while others key in on surface problems, centering issues, wear and damage. Sales price is a factor of a dealer's opinion on how easy he will be able to find someone who sees the beauty in spite of the faults. In large Greek silver, it might be easier to find a sale for a $1000 perfect coin than a $200 compromised one. The OP coin has faults but they are nicely located to avoid ruining the coin. The front of the face is free of the porosity behind the head. The poor centering on the reverse made room for the roughness that could have ruined the legends or figure but didn't. The only thing I might call a poor choice made by this coin is the obverse centering favoring the neck rather than the forehead. It is what I would call a great coin for collectors like me (and, I assume, noob) who would rather have five of these than one perfect one.

Yes I would be happy with just one also, but then I needed to get the coin of his Father Demetrius the Savior of Judea and his brother the Demetrius the Victor. Then I would need Parthia coins and Roman coins to supplement the collection. This would end up with me getting Judea coins. Then I would have to get other versions of the shekel of Tyre. I would need something of Alexander Balas, this can go on all day and until my bank account is well into the negative.
