Is this like hostage exchange where I'd need to send them one of their large cents in return?

I like repatriating old coins. I've brought 2 Flying Eagle cents home from Italy via ebay. They don't circulate much in Italy, so they tend to be in pretty nice condition.

I've toyed with the idea of coin swapping through other forums ... where I'd send somebody from Germany a great 2 pfennig from 1875, and they could send me any old us coin. I'll bet I have better than average foreign coins, relative to condition. It would be interesting.

Not long ago I got a nice VF 1865 Three Cent(nickel)from Belgium via ebay - at a better price than I could get here in the US.

When I get a foreign coin, I have no idea what to do with it, or what it's worth. Must be sort of the same thing. I'd think that most countries would have collectors who are mainly interested in their own coins.

This is the second flying eagle. It's Struck Through Grease, but otherwise AU. I picked it up for 68 dollars including postage. The reverse is equally nice.

That 1857 is a beauty. I've seen that "grease" effect on other Flying Eagles over the years, as well. I seem to recall once reading that the mint employees would then use wood chips to scrape the dies. Possibly, the wood splinters would cause this effect, too?

The best buy from another country that I've managed to buy was an 1864 L Indian in XF+ from England. The seller had simply it listed as an 1864 in fine condition. This was about five years ago, and the cost with postage was about $25. I later flipped it to a dealer friend.

That's Struck Through Grease? Cool! I have one sorta like that and always assumed it was just weirdly worn. Well, maybe mine actually is weirdly worn. What do you think:

Maybe that one was next off the press after Chancellor Sutler's. Weak area is the same.
