All right, I picked this one up yesterday and have to admit it surprised me quite a bit:

Just wondering what everybody else's opinion was on it and whether anybody can guess why I was so surprised.

Were you surprised to find it was probably made a century (or more?) after 1776?

All right, I won't keep you guys in suspense...

I bought this yeserday at the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum gift shop as part of a set of six "Historical Replica Coins (State Coins 1776-1787)." Obviously, I bought them knowing they were replicas. What surprised me, though, was that, while the other five coins in the set were all marked "COPY", this one wasn't. Bit of an oversight there, doncha think? I wonder how many of these are out there fooling neophyte collectors?

The set, btw, was produced right here in the old U.S. of A, proving that you don't need to look to China to see fakes like these.

Still, gotta say, China still has us beat in the quality of their fakes. Look how porous this cast copy is! Come on, you American knockoff peddlers! Step up y

The other coins have a very clear "Copy" on it.

As for the porousity, it's not nearly as obvious in hand as it is in my macro photographs.

Even if it is it still isn't in compliance with the HPA. The law specifies the height, length, and depth of the word COPY. It has to be incuse either 1/3 or 1/2 the thickness of the item, I forget which and don't feel like looking it up.

Here's the complete set, btw:

Surprising-1776-New-Hampshire-Halfpenny

The word "COPY" appears in different sizes for each of the other coins, but it is still clearly visible.

I think the only one that may have it the legal size is the Immune Columbia piece. The law requires it to be in san serif letters a minimum of 2 mm high and the word a minimum of 6 mm long.
