I was going through a "junk pile" of silver last night and came across a merc dime obverse / Wheat penny reverse ... anybody ever heard of such a thing ? Obviously the dime is smaller so the penny is incomplete.

That's called a "mule" ... but there are fakes of anything imaginable.

Pictures are a start.

I agree.

That's mostly likely a Magician's coin, and if by accident that it was strike with a wheat reverse die, you're looking at big $$$$.

Can't be a Magician's coin if the Wheat cent reverse is too big for the planchet, though!

Anybody know if there's EVER been an instance where two wrong denomination dies were matched up and a coin minted?

@DaveH...

Quote:
Mule Error
This is a rare Mint error where the obverse die is of one coin and the reverse die is of another coin. The most famous of the Mule errors is a Sacagawea dollar/Washington quarter Mule, where a Washington quarter obverse is paired with a Sacagawea reverse.

The big question is - is one side copper and the other silver?

Per the OP "the dime is smaller so the penny is incomplete." Cents are bigger than dimes, so it makes sense that all of the cent side wouldn't be there, if it was trimmed to fit the dime half of the coin. If the sides are two different metals, that's a clincher that it's a Magician's coin. If they're the same metal this could definitely be worth a lot. Pictures are needed!

Meaning, obverse silver, with a full image, and reverse copper with a full image?
