It came to my attention that I always post pictures of my silver but never my relatively small gold stash. This is all the gold I currently own minus the bracelet on my watch and the contents of my fathers vault. I have no idea what he had when he died other then an awesome NGC MS65 $20 Lib and couple other raw $20 pieces and well of course his silver. I guess if I was in dire need for the money I would open it, but the thought that he was the last one to open it brings tears to my eyes. I hope I never have to open it maybe i'll get lucky and my kids will be the ones opening it after I'm long gone. Anyway this is an all PM thread no talk about Ar's. I am in no way trying to often the Mods, please do not take it as such. My $20 pieces  A couple $10 pieces, the indian has always been a jewelry piece.    The $5 Lib in MS62 is one of my favorite coins  My scrap mainly 14kt but some 18kt in there to.  A group shot, thanks for looking  |

I do wonder though why you measure everything in ounces though, surely grams are better!
Since there are multiple different ounce definitions I try to avoid the measurement like the plague. Cooks might use 28gram ounce, jewellers tend towards the Troy ounce (31.1g but some just round it to 30grams) and then there are fine ounces (gold or silver content weight is calculated) and Spanish Dutch and Chinese ounces.
That just leaves me bewildered and since I don't know what any other persons definition happens to be I just avoid the measurement and look for weight in grams.

Thank you, I just showed it in ounces to for display purposes. We use DWT here or pennyweights to measure scrap gold and silver.

UK Dave, DWT is a proper form of measurement for PMz and have been for eons, while us over in the west decided to re-write the book a couple of hundred years ago, hence making everything way more complicated then it needs to be, typical human behavior....
Here is a simple formula for all....
A troy oz. at 31.108 converts to 20 DWT, as 20 DWT is one oz.....
To convert grams to DWT or vice versa, simply multiply or divide your total weight by 1.552....

DWT is a new one on me, thanks for the explaination...
With weights and measures though there is a lot to be said to using what you have always used (I can judge a persons height in feet and inches and his weight in stone but for technical drawings or carpentry I would measure in Metre's, Centimetres and millimeters.)
Since I have always worked with grams for small metal items I will continue to do so, even if your logic is sound. Maybe one day the whole world will be singing from the same hym sheet but I doubt it will be in my lifetime.

Most of us have encountered inexperienced PM sellers and buyers who confuse troy and avoirdupois ounces. Then, of course, there's the most costly example of what happens when not everyone uses the same units of measure.  |

A simple example....
A guy walks up with a gold ring 10k class ring style given from former employer and it weighs 11.5 penny weight (DWT) on my scale....
Since there are only 20 penny weight in a troy oz., verses 31.108 grams we know an individual DWT is LARGER then a gram....
So to figure out how many grams that ring weighs.....
11.5 x 1.552= 17.8 grams or just over a half oz.....
Again a 20 DWT to an oz. so 11.5 would be just over half (1.5 DWT to be exact) just like the example above....
Can be real complicated to some of if you think too much keep it simple....
