It's been dipped to hide any discolouration associated with wear. The obverse surfaces look like a lightly circulated coin (full of minor surface marks) but it could still grade MS60-61 if it is free of wear - it's difficult to tell as wear usually shows up as a discolouration and a change in reflectivity but this has been dipped to hide that.

Hello wwwww,
I can understand dipping to remove discolouration but, surely, the wear would still be visible?

What is the theory behind dipping? Do these people use some sort of proprietary product or a secret concoction of their own brew?
I can recall discussions about various ingredients to treat coins but I can't recall a thread about dipping. Do you have a link for one?

Sorry to be a bother but I am curious.

Thanks,
Jeff

So WWWWW I would be interested to know if you think this coin would be
accepted by a TPG for grading if its been dipped?

From what I understand about silver dips, they add to the surfaces, fill in little nicks & scrathes.
They are designed to conceal imperfections.
Silver dips are readily available on ebay & some coin accessories sellers.

Very nice looking coin BTW Stevo.

I've had 999 silver chains dipped at a jeweller's but unfortunately once they are dipped they discolour over time & you have to continue dipping them to bring them back to shiny silver.

Thanks appleangel07 this one seems to be holding its colour buts its only been 3 months since it arrived so hopefully the seller was telling the truth when he said it had just come out of storage after 30 years

It will probably still slab, a dipped coin is no more likely to tone than a naturally white coin - this is dependent on environmental factors, the difference is if it does tone it won't be as attractive as the lustre has already dulled.

Well yes, but the easiest way to tell between wear and a softness in strike is by the discolouration. Otherwise you can look at how the light reflects off the point in question (you'd need the coin in hand for this), or you can put the coin under a microscope, neither of these can be done from a photo and once the coin is dipped they become your only options.

I bought this one as UNC and paid the going rate but was a bit
worried that it would come back as cleaned so it was a good result
