This is one of my favorite qtrs, I can see shine under the scratch, but it is always an eye catcher when going through my album. I can't get the lighting to show it, but it's very copper colored, not sure why though, Thought I'd share it.

Since this is a 1951 quarter, it is silver and cannot rust. The only rusty US coin you will find is a 1943 steel cent. Silver coins can tone, or form a patina(think of the green surface on copper gutters and roof flashing). Environmental or chemical exposure can cause silver to tone anywhere from rainbow colors to black. More than likely, this is what happened. It is also possible that something has been coated on the coin but it is probably just toning.

that is what some would call desirable well until you tried to scratch it of lol.(that's only what it looks like to me that is a big ugly scratch on the obverse. some will pay a premium for that tone. but not me sorry had to add that.

I tried to get a good picture to show that the reeds on the edge are normal and not filled in like it had been dipped in paint, but can't get the lighting right. So, I'll just go with toned for now.

The scratch came with the coin, I didn't try to rub or scratch off the color.
