1963 New Zealand Kiwi One Florin

The Kiwi bird is the national symbol of New Zealand, a flightless ratites, which is unique in its feather structure, size and egg to size ratio (the egg of the kiwi is very large compared to the bird). It is about the size of a chicken, much smaller than its close relatives, the Emu and Cassowaries. It is very threatened by foriegn imported predators (read cats) and habitat loss. There are 5 species and a number of subspecies.

New Zealanders have been known as Kiwi's since the use of the bird as a mascot for an elite military unit in the late 19th century and then expaned to all New Zealand soldiers during World War I.

The Florin was part of the previous monetary system of New Zealand, valued at 2 shillings (of which 20 shillings made a pound) , which was minted from 1933 until 1946 in %50 silver and from 1947 to 1967 as Cu-Ni alloy. This 1963 example is uncirculated and the coin is 28.5 mm, about the size of a half dollar.

thankyou. the two pics didn't come through, but the link works.

We used to occasionally see these in Australia, in our change. When NZ decimalized, the florin became 20-cents, but the kiwi remained, and we still see them in our change.

in Australia, the word "Kiwi" is most associated with the bird, the people of NZ, and a brand of shoe-polish. There is a story about a visiting American soldier in WW2, trying to buy some: first he asked for "kay-one-dublya-one", and when that didn't succeed, he described the label "y'know, the one with the short-**** duck".

when I visited USA, I went to the Grand Canyon. I took an a joy-flight. When I went to the airport, looking for the correst hangar, I noticed one of the other airlines operating was "Kiwi Air" - odd name !
