I've seen several fake coin threads but don't recall seeing any on proof coins. Do prrof coins require too much work to fake or are there fake proof coins out there as well?

I've seen polished or even rainbow toned coins advertised as proof but I have not seen a counterfeit proof (that I know of).

I agree with muddler, and to make a good counterfeit proof, one would need access to proof planchets and some high quality dies...
The only person I know of that could produce such a coin would be created by Daniel Carr of the Moonlight Mint, where he produces fantasy overstrikes (on a genuine Mint press he purchased from the Mint as scrap), like the 1964D Peace dollar. Since Daniel only strikes fantasy coins that have not been minted by the U.S.Mint, thay cannot be labeled as counterfeits..
A google search will show you his quality of work...

IMHO minting or casting a fake proof is just to difficult or to costly to be done
on a scale big enough to make the crooks a profit.
Most of the fake coins I have seen are what I call classic coins.
A few years agi I did buy a pretty large lot of fakes.
I wanted them to be able to compare a modern fake to the real coins.
For the most part I bought type set coins. And one very rare Morgan dollar thats a fake but it is 90% Silver.

I have seen various "tribute" proof sets on ebay before with things like a tribute 1936 proof set, all proofs, all S mint with the mintmarks on the obverse like they are today. I'm sure there are others out there.

I have also seen 1990 Prestige proof sets that have been opened and a 1990 business strike cent inserted then the holder reassembled and the set sold as containing the 1990 no S proof cent.
