Hello there,

This is my first post.

I've got two questions. I have two sets of the Silver Eagles, including the reverse proof. I am considering having the reverse proof graded, hoping for an MS70. My first question is this: Is there something I can look for in order to give me an idea if my coins might actually get the MS70? I hate to spend the money and come back with an MS69.

The second question is this: Might it be wise to NOT break up the set by not grading the reverse proof? If many people break up their sets, the complete set might become rare.

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

God bless,
Pat

You can try to post a picture of it in the grading section. There are a lot of forum member with excellent grading skills. As for breaking up the set, I think you will get a range of opinions. I have a set and plan on keeping it together in the original packaging. If you send the Reverse Proof in to be slabbed it wont be MS70 because it is Proof. It will be PF70 or PF69. Good luck and keep us posted on what you decide.

So you keep the packaging (The services will send them back if you request it and pay return postage) and if the set become more valuable than the grading coins, you crack them out and reassemble the "original" set.

If you are going to send in the reverse proof, you might as well send in the unc W as well. I would say that you have a 10% chance of getting a 70 on either coin. I've submitted many many sets and I've averaged about 15% 70s.

If you send in one/two sets...it's really a stuff shoot. The odds are stacked against you. Sure, you can roll the dice and see what you get. If you get a MS70 unc W ..the increased premium on that 1 coin is about $100.00. MS69s have been selling for $150 and MS70s between $250-$300.

In answer to your second question, unless you sell the reverse proof you are not breaking up the set. The set still has all 3 coins ..one or two just happen to be in slabs. Since you have opened the box already ..there is no need to send NGC the packaging. The only one eligible for the 20th anniversary label at this point is the RP...if you send in the unc W it will get the normal tan label.
