I just negotiated the purchase of this lot of Barber dimes from an ebay seller on the West Coast. It took a little more than I really wanted to spend to buy them, but look toward the bottom, near the center of this picture. That's a 1907-S that you see the reverse of. The lot cost me right about the FMV of that coin in AU-50. The rest of them are pretty worn, but the prospect of more San Francisco minted coins is better than with your typical barber lot. These were collected many years ago, before the internet, by a west coast collector. It would only take a couple more S mint marks to make his a sweet lot. Asit is, if the rest are all commons, I'm going to assemble a roll and sell them to recoup some of the money I've spent on Barber dime lots. The last lot had 31 coins. This one has 37. I'll post anthing exciting that might come up from this lot. I like these "old" accumulations. The potential to find some goodies is much higher than with lots typically offered. These haven't been traded around and high graded yet. I once bought an old carded set of mercs out of washington state that had belonged to an older collector and had been left to a descendent who had no use for them. Most of the San Francisco minted coins from that lot ended up replacing dimes in my merc set. After I got done high grading it, I sold it for almost what I'd paid for it. If there's only the one nice coin in this lot... so be it, but it will be interesting to go through these. If there are no others and I sell them all off, I could end up with a 1907-S in EF-AU for less than 25 dollars. In addition to the picture of the entire lot, I've posted a cropped image of the reverse of the 07-S Chance Edited by Chancellor Sutler 08/16/2012 10:43 pm

It looks like a good buy from what I see in the picture. Several have full rims and the 1911 looks promising, at least a VG there depending on how much of LIBERTY is visible. Ed ANA LM-3175

Rather slim odds, but that 01 could be a San Francisco issue. This lot's coming from Anaheim. There are several 1913s too,and an "S" on one or two of those would be OK too. The seller doesn't know a thing about coins. They didn't collect them ... just ended up with them, so anything they get for them is profit.
Anything of value beyond the 07-S will be gravy. It'd be sweet to recover the entire investment, and keep the 07-S for the trouble. Too far fetched? ... perhaps not.

These just cleared the last "hurdle", passing through the sort facility that is the "last stop" before hitting my post office. Looks like I should get these in 10 or 12 hours.
Sure as I say that .... they won't show up. I was wrong about the point of origin. They're coming from Sacramento, not Anaheim.
Details later....hoping for the best of course. Out of 5 1913 dated dimes ... there has to be at least 1 "S" minted one ....hopefully. We'll see soon enough.
Just pulled up a Google map. Sacramento is not far from San Franciso ...kind of "ground zero".

I can't even imagine how un-nerving that must be. I hate driving in Pittsburgh ... which I imagine is probably like driving in Mayberry compared to commuting on California's highways.

You can't get here from there in Pittsburgh! (That joke still have any currency? It did when I was a kid.)

I remember back when it was "The Smoky City"... the quote was "You come clean from Pittsburgh? ... Nobody comes clean from Pittsburgh".

That one I don't remember, but when I was a kid it was "Most places you can't get there from here, but in Pittsburgh you can't even get here from there!" Talking about all the one-way streets . . . AY YI YI, spare me!

Got 'em ...... I took the seller's word at face value when I said the AU coin was a 1907-S. Turns out it's even better ...it's a 1910-S and probably AU-53 to AU-55. In addition there are 8 other San Franciso minted coins, including a F-12 or better 1915-S, and a decent 1911-S. There are 7 Denver minted coins, no New Orleans minted coins, and 21 Philadelphia issues, including one heavily worn 1857 seated liberty. Now to assemble a roll to recover some of my expenditure.... Anaheim and Sacramento are faaaaaaaaaaar apart! Like going from NYC to Charlston SC! San Francisco and Sac are both on 80. In non-commute traffic you can get from one to the other in about an hour and 15 minutes.
Chance back in the day Sacramento, besides being the Capital, was the largest city in that part of the state and would have received most of its coinage from the SF mint.
I grew up both in the city and inbetween those two cities and it was frustrating trying to find the Philly issues for my folders!!
Congrats on the cool find!

I knowsome folks will want to argue that the edges of the headband of the 1910-S aren't sharp enough to warrant an AU grade, and I was doing some searching to determine if they were an issue that tends to be softly struck. There's an MS-67 on the PCGS coinfacts page that's got incomplete edges on the headband. I know a bit about Barber half dollars from having collected those. The 1905 issues are all softly struck, and finding a fully struck up one is really rare. Chance

I'm keeping just the 1910-S and the 1915-S. The rest are going back on the block. Between the extras from the last lot and the 35 in this lot, I have roll of 50 that I'll try and recoup some of the investment on. I only kept 6 from the last lot.
I briefly thought about assembling a set, but I'll just keep gathering inexpensive high grade specimens ,and maybe some day I'll have the start of a set that's "worth having".
