I am just astonished at what even established sellers will try to pass off as legit. And the BS in this listing is piled so high it is laughable. Total nonsense, yet the treasure seekers are expecting a "too-good-to-be-true" deal. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1878-Goloid...em3a78919201

Unless and until the seller of this can prove that the item is a new discovery, it doesn't exist. I have more confidence in Dr.Judd and Q.D.B. There are NO Goloid Dollars of 1878 with Iron and Nickel composition. All known 1878 Goloid patterns are struck as Proofs as well. No way this item has even a remote resemblance to a Proof.

Read the entire description... Quote: A good study coin for the advanced collector of U.S. Dollars but not a new pattern alloy in my opinion as the coin appears as a business strike in its fabric design and general appearance and does not exhibit any proof-like surfaces. Coin has a reeded edge and its weight is heavier as its not a goloid alloy with gold being detected only at 0.03% and silver only at 0.18%.
He collects and sells contemporary counterfeits. Google John Lorenzo + coin...

"He collects and sells contemporary counterfeits" Which is prohibited on ebay. If this is not a contemporary counterfeit, then it is a modern counterfeit. Either way, it doesn't belong on ebay, which is the context of my original post.

I have seen notes listed as "copy" on ebay.

Copies or fakes being sold as copies or fakes are not misleading and theres no real reason why they shouldnt be able to be sold. The buyers can make the decision if they want copies or fakes or not

It is an accurate description of the coin. He clearly states what the composition of the coin is. I dont think this one qualifies as something that makes a wasteland of junk. A bit over stated.

And how may bidders would be able establish that this item is a copy, even though the lengthy description carefully avoids making that clear, as well as claiming that the item is rare? This item can be purchased in mass quantities on the streets of Shanghai for less than $5 U.S.

" Copies or fakes being sold as copies or fakes are not misleading and theres no real reason why they shouldnt be able to be sold. The buyers can make the decision if they want copies or fakes or not." Unfortunately ebay does not agree with this.

I havent seen where ebay says that anywhere if you could link it Id be more than happy to read it. But they are a private company and its their right to say what can be sold. Either way theres nothing wrong with selling them if listed as such

A quote snipped from a post by colonialjohn to the discussion here on 7/30/2012, titled "Will fakes ever ruin the hobby?": "The predominant new fakes from China for silver coins are normally iron/nickel alloys but they have improved to german silver."I just thought it rather odd that this information is nowhere to be found in this seller's ebay description of an item of same composition. Maybe it was just an oversight by the seller.

(IMHO) If its not actual currency (i.e. counterfeits) then it needs to be labeled as such so people like me that are still learning, don't get caught with their pants down.
