I have been browsing ebay for some time... looking to buy one of 4 coins... finally I won one of them :) The other three coins I aam looking to buy are a silver Alexander III drachm, a Hadrian denarius and a cartwheel 2 pence. I found a nice little lot which contains one of thosse coins...I hope I can win that one too. As for my silver 1587 sixpence it will be my oldest British coin (previously it was a 1747 halfpenny) opinions on this coin please (I will receive it in the post soon)

I`ve been looking for a good deal for months on a coin from the 16th century as well. Can`t find any in the VF to EF condition that I`d like for a price I`m willing to pay.
It is a lovely coin tho, I`m somewhat jealous...

I like it - tudor rose, and also relates to our current Lizzy.
Hadrian Denarius? Eesh, be careful with those, they sell pretty pricy in the UK for obvious reasons. Make sure you arent getting a fake (I recommend surfing other country's ebays)

That was my problem too finding one which was good enough to join my collection but for not too much money. I am not sure what forum members would consider a good price for a coin like this but I think it is worth what I paid.
How does this coin grade? I see that many of these the portrait is really worn, also the dates are undecipherable. Mine there is wear on it but the date can be read and the portrait recognised...also not too many people have shaved the edges so it is nearly round. These factors mean that for me it is good enough yet not too expensive.
Agreed about the prices on Hadrian denarius...and I am finding it hard to find a well priced roman or greek coin that really does it for me.
Anyway, a couple of days to go on this other lot that I like the look of... no bids on it yet and relatively few views...I best not get my hopes up but if I win it I will be posting about it :)
Its a lot of 3 coins and one has verdigris (but I am armed with verdicare and may be able to rescue that one) but I am buying it for the main coin in the lot...hoping to get all three for the price of the one that I want.
Man I have been trawling ages to buy some coins... banknotes I can always find something to buy but coins either I just expect too much from the coin or too much from the price.

David, did you buy your Verdicare in the UK?

Quote: How does this coin grade? In my opinion from the small pictures you posted, the obverse is Fine+ and the reverse is Fine.

I bought my verdicare from wizard coin supplies online... postage was expensive to the UK but the product is wonderful. I have used it on 6 coins so far and they have been resusitated to life.
Fine is OK by me, it was advertised as very good but since there is more than one scale in use I feel that I must make up my own mind simply if I like it and compare it to other coins for sale.

I like that coin. So often these are too worn to see details and I've found that the obverse of this series gets worn extremely quickly making it hard to find a good one at a decent price.

The coin is round, nice, good silver and would be welcome in my collection.Hammered don't stick to the rules of milled grading.I would happily buy at Fine prices.

I received the coin today, it is even nicer in the flesh. I am used to milled so was expecting it to be slightly thicker than it is but it makes sense that a hammered coin would be thinner. It is still perfectly flat though and I had pictured it to be about the size of a ten pence coin, it is slightly larger.
I asked the seller where he came by it, it was picked up in an auction package. I was hoping for a story of how it was dug out of the ground somewhere but alas no such provinance.
It came particularly carefully packaged inside cardboard with bubble wrap and in a little plastic pouch... since it is larger than a shilling it doesn't fit in any airtights that I have and I am not sure I trust the plastic pouch to be archive quality plastic. It being silver I don't really want to leave it in the air to oxidize either... so not quite sure where I will store it as it breaks the mould being a different catagory of coin to the rest of my items.
Still that is a nice problem to have, I think I bought it at a fair price (£60) and am pleased with the purchase :)
My other lot that I was interested in I am leading bidder with an hour left...I think if there are no more bids it is well under value and I am prepared to double my current bid if I have to...lets hope I don't have to. Photo's to follow if I win it.

I just wont that lot too :) I was the first and only bidder, I was prepaared to spend on the 2 pence what all three coins cost. As you can see the 1 pence needs some attention but I was willing to chance that as the 2 pence was something I was looking to replace in my collection. It is the heaviest circulation coinage of Britain weighing 57g of copper.

These coins arrived today. I gave the cartwheel penny a little bit of verdi-care and the green stuff was solid so I thought best to leave it alone. In fairness it doesn't look quite so bad in the flesh. The other two coins seem OK and I am glad to have replaced the 2 pence into my collection (the last one I had wass so worn it was hard to make out any details)
With over 3 ounces of copper here I wonder what the spot is on these coins, I can't have paid much more.

David, how much did you pay? I'm looking to get a Georgian half pence, as I already have one that my great gran had saved from circulation (somehow!) and it is very very worn and I would like a nicer condition one to compare againt.
I agree, they are very heavy things, shows the value of the penny back then!

I paid £50 for all three... the last few cartwheel 2 pences I was bidding on in similar condition to this one went to over £60 so to me it was like getting the other two coins free.
